In einer bewegenden Gruppenausstellung zeigt die Galerie [ Der Lokschuppen ] Malerei und Grafik einer Hamburger Künstlergruppe und Holzskulpturen von Berthold Grzywatz. Die Gruppe präsentiert einen Maler und zwölf weitere Künstlerinnen, die sich, wie kann es anders sein, unter differenzierten thematischen Schwerpunkten, bildnerischen Techniken und Zielsetzungen der Malerei und Grafik verschrieben haben. Gemeinsam ist ihnen eine kollegiale Ausstellungspraxis, eine Existenz zwischen Leben und künstlerischer Berufung sowie die langjährige Kontinuität menschlichen Zusammenhalts.

Andernorts, der vielsagende Titel der Ausstellung trägt programmatischen Charakter; Die Suche nach dem Woanders, den Anderswo transzendiert das Hiersein, die Anwesenheit im Gegebenen. Betrachten wir das Gegenwärtige als Bühne, die von ihrer Ausstattung wie ihren Begegnungen lebt, werden wir angesichts der Vielgestaltigkeit der vorhandenen Probleme von Sprachlosigkeit geprägt. Die Suche nach Orientierung ist unerlässlich, die Hoffnung auf Zeichen Inspiration.

Malerei und Grafik der Gruppe sucht in freien Assoziationen die Konfrontation mit dem Anderweitigen. Räume für Fantasie, für Träume und individuelle Erfahrungen sollen erschlossen werden. Der malerische oder grafische Impuls ist für Formen und Farben sensibilisiert, öffnet sich den Schichtungen und ihrer Dynamik auf der Leinwand, gibt der Spontaneität des emotionalen Erlebens im künstlerischen Prozess Raum. Es ist immer wieder ein Anfang, Entwicklung in Permanenz, roh und ungeschminkt, auf dem Weg zu Bildideen, die mit dem Unerwarteten spielen. Die Polarität zwischen Gelebtem und Werk erweist sich als Schein, denn trotz aller Unterschiede wird diese durch Gleichzeitigkeit charakterisiert, oder, anders gesagt, durch den Zusammenhang allen realen Geschehens.

Der Bildhauer Berthold Grzywatz, auf den die Gruppe nicht verzichten wollte, stellt sich andernorts mit einem Skulpturenprogramm ein, welches das plastische Grundmaterial Holz massiv gliedert, bricht, aufreißt, mit Stahlmaterialien bürstet sowie partiell flächig schleift und beruhigt. Die farblich gefassten Skulpturen sind mit einer Ausnahme in intensiven Rottönen gehalten. Wenn auch in abstrakter Form geht die Gestaltung vom Abbild des Menschen aus. Dieser ist nicht holzfarben wie das Grundmaterial, sondern lebt mit den verschiedensten farblichen Haut- und Haartönen. Insofern präsentiert sich der Mensch ebenso als plastisches wie als farbliches Bild; Form und Farbe bilden mithin eine künstlerische Einheit. In der kulturellen Symbolik hat das Rot vielfältige Bedeutungen; für den Bildhauer Berthold Grzywatz ist es häufig ein Symbol der Erneuerung, demgemäß verbindet sich der Blick mit dem anderen Ort, mit dem Überwinden des unwirtlichen Wirklichen.

In a moving group exhibition, the [ Der Lokschuppen ] gallery is showing paintings and graphics by a group of Hamburg artists and wood sculptures by Berthold Grzywatz. The group presents a painter and twelve other artists who, how could it be otherwise, have dedicated themselves to painting and graphic art with differentiated thematic focuses, artistic techniques and objectives. What they have in common is a collegial exhibition practice, an existence between life and artistic vocation and the long-standing continuity of human cohesion.

Andernorts (Elsewhere), the exhibition's evocative title, has a programmatic character; the search for the elsewhere, the elsewhere transcends being here, presence in the given. If we look at the present as a stage that lives from its furnishings and its encounters, we become speechless in the face of the diversity of existing problems. The search for orientation is essential, the hope for signs inspiration.

The group's paintings and graphics seek confrontation with the other in free associations. Spaces for fantasy, for dreams and individual experiences are to be opened up. The painterly or graphic impulse is sensitized to forms and colors, opens up to the layers and their dynamics on the canvas, gives space to the spontaneity of emotional experience in the artistic process. It is always a beginning, development in permanence, raw and unadorned, on the way to pictorial ideas that play with the unexpected. The polarity between the lived and the work proves to be an illusion, because despite all differences, it is characterized by simultaneity, or, in other words, by the connection of all real events.

The sculptor Berthold Grzywatz, whom the group did not want to do without, presents himself elsewhere with a sculpture program that massively structures, breaks, tears open, brushes with steel materials and partially grinds and soothes the plastic base material wood. With one exception, the colored sculptures are kept in intense red tones. Although in abstract form, the design is based on the image of a human being. This is not wood-colored like the basic material, but comes to life with a wide variety of colored skin and hair tones. In this respect, the human being presents itself as both a sculptural and a colorful image; form and color thus form an artistic unity. In cultural symbolism, red has a variety of meanings; for the sculptor Berthold Grzywatz, it is often a symbol of renewal; accordingly, the gaze connects with the other place, with overcoming the inhospitable real.

Unter dem Titel „Heroes of Work“ zeigt die Galerie [ Der Lokschuppen ] Fotografie von Manfred G. Schwellies und Plastiken von Berthold Grzywatz.

Manfred G. Schwellies, zurzeit in Bad Karlshafen lebend, ist als Fotodesigner, Industrie- und Produktfotograf gefragt, zudem hat er sich international einen Namen in der künstlerischen Fotografie gemacht. Schon 1978 wird er auf der Photokina Köln für seine künstlerische Leistungen ausgezeichnet und nur wenige Jahre später in die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie berufen. Seine Ausbildung erhält er zunächst im Fotostudio der Karstadt AG, anschließend an der Fachhochschule für Kunst und Gestaltung in Dortmund.

Mitte der achtziger Jahre unterbricht Schwellies seine freiberufliche Tätigkeit, um ein Studium der Theologie und Philosophie in Augsburg aufzunehmen. Nicht zufällig führt ihn das Studium künstlerisch mit den Themen Wahrnehmung, Persönlichkeit und Identität zur Fotocollage und experimentellen Portraitfotografie. Die Dokumentation bleibt unterdessen ein wichtiger Bestandteil seiner Arbeit, die uns in der Werkreihe „Heroes of Work“ begegnet. Schwellies zeigt in klassischer Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografie arbeitende Menschen in der Schwerindustrie. Die Werke sind innerhalb von sechs Jahren an den verschiedensten Stätten des In- und Auslands entstanden. Sie zeigen nicht den Menschen als Teil des industriellen Prozesses, sondern sie rücken den Arbeiter in den Mittelpunkt, porträtieren ihn vor dem Hintergrund von Werkstatt und Fertigung.

Die Werke stehen weniger in der Tradition der Sozialfotografie, die im Wege der Dokumentation gesellschaftliche Ungleichheit anklagt. Schwellies begegnet dem industriellen Arbeiter vielmehr mit einem objektiven Blick, wenn auch nicht ohne Empathie. Er schenkt den Menschen Raum, hebt sie aus der Anonymität des industriellen Stoffwechsels heraus, ohne sie außerhalb ihres sozialen Kontextes zu isolieren.

Für die von der Abstraktion lebende Kunst Berthold Grzywatz‘ eine Herausforderung, auf die er variantenreich mit der Metallplastik reagiert. Die in Aluminium ausgeführten Werke sind – und darin liegt die Anknüpfung – Teil eines Fertigungsprozesses, der gleichsam industriellen Charakter trägt. Schließlich werden sie nach den Modellen des Künstlers in einer Gießerei hergestellt. Nach dem Guss bei Temperaturen von über 800° Celsius verlangen die Werke vielfältige Formen der Bearbeitung, die an den Schmutz der industriellen Rohstofffabrikation denken lässt. Am Ende, in der Ausstellungshalle, steht der Betrachter vor den hochpolierten oder gestrahlten Flächen der Plastiken, ohne von der Düsterheit der Herstellung etwas zu ahnen.

Under the title "Heroes of Work", the [ Der Lokschuppen ] gallery is showing photography by Manfred G. Schwellies and sculptures by Berthold Grzywatz.

Manfred G. Schwellies, who currently lives in Bad Karlshafen, is in demand as a photo designer, industrial and product photographer and has also made a name for himself internationally in the field of artistic photography. As early as 1978, he was honored for his artistic achievements at Photokina Cologne and only a few years later was appointed to the German Photographic Society. He initially trained at the Karstadt AG photo studio and then at the University of Art and Design in Dortmund.

In the mid-1980s, Schwellies interrupted his freelance work to study theology and philosophy in Augsburg. It was no coincidence that his studies led him artistically to photo collage and experimental portrait photography with the themes of perception, personality and identity. Meanwhile, documentation remains an important part of his work, which we encounter in the "Heroes of Work" series. Schwellies shows people working in heavy industry in classic black and white photography. The works were created over a period of six years at various locations in Germany and abroad. Rather than showing people as part of the industrial process, they focus on the workers, portraying them against the backdrop of the workshop and production.

The works are less in the tradition of social photography, which laments social inequality through documentation. Instead, Schwellies approaches the industrial worker with an objective gaze, albeit not without empathy. He gives people space, lifts them out of the anonymity of industrial metabolism without isolating them outside their social context.

This is a challenge for Berthold Grzywatz's abstract art, to which he responds in a variety of ways with metal sculpture. The works executed in aluminum are - and therein lies the connection - part of a production process that has an industrial character, so to speak. After all, they are produced in a foundry according to the artist's models. After being cast at temperatures of over 800° Celsius, the works require various forms of processing that are reminiscent of the dirt of industrial raw material production. At the end, in the exhibition hall, the viewer stands before the highly polished or blasted surfaces of the sculptures, without suspecting anything of the grimness of their production.

Unter dem Titel „Spur und Verdichtung“ zeigt die Galerie [ Der Lokschuppen ] Malerei von Ilka Christof und Skulpturen von Berthold Grzywatz.

Die im westfälischen Hagen geborene und in Kassel arbeitende Malerin Ilka Christof hat visuelle Kommunikation und freie Grafik an der Hochschule für bildende Künste Kassel studiert. Im Zentrum ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit steht über Jahrzehnte das freie, auf die Fantasie gegründete Zeichnen, bis sie Ende der achtziger Jahre den abstrakten Expressionismus entdeckt, der sie nicht mehr loslässt.  Aus der Abschottung der inneren Fantasie heraustreten, die Gegenständlichkeit überwinden heißt es, und sich der Spontaneität des Malprozesses stellen. Doch der Umgang mit der Freiheit, verbunden mit der körperlichen Aktion, der freien Geste und dem authentischen Ausdruck des Selbst stellt eine Herausforderung dar, die einen radikalen Bruch verlangt. Dieser Bruch gestaltet sich bei Christof als Neuanfang in Kombination mit tradierten Maltechniken, die sich auf die Verdichtung, auf das Übereinanderlagern von Farbschichten konzentrieren. Die Rückbindung an den abstrakten Expressionismus spiegelt sich in der Formlosigkeit, dem Ungegenständlichen wider. Doch vergessen wir nicht, jede Formlosigkeit hat eine Form. Und schon zeigen persönliche Erfahrungen, Verluste, die Vergänglichkeit der Existenz; sie erzwingen eine weitere Wende, mit sich Christof auch wieder den Dingen hingibt.

Die von Berthold Grzywatz präsentierten Skulpturen leben von der freien Form. Einerseits entfalten sie eine expressive Diktion, entwerfen zerklüftete Flächen, die scheinbar ohne Halt sind, andererseits vermitteln sie eine strenge Kompositionsweise, die einfache Grundformen in Szene setzen. Die Gestaltung ist ebenso absichtsvoll wie intensiv, wenn auch nicht oberflächlich eindeutig. Wie in einem Brennspiegel verweisen sie auf die Spuren menschlicher Realität, auf Gefühle, Stimmungen, Sehnsüchte, Wahrnehmungen.

Under the title "Spur und Verdichtung", the [ Der Lokschuppen ] gallery is showing paintings by Ilka Christof and sculptures by Berthold Grzywatz.

Born in Hagen, Westphalia, and working in Kassel, the painter Ilka Christof studied visual communication and free graphics at the Kassel University of Fine Arts. For decades, her artistic work centred on free drawing based on her imagination, until she discovered abstract expressionism at the end of the 1980s, which she never let go of.  Stepping out of the isolation of her inner fantasy, overcoming representationalism and facing up to the spontaneity of the painting process. But dealing with freedom, combined with physical action, free gesture and the authentic expression of the self, represents a challenge that demands a radical break. In Christof's work, this break takes the form of a new beginning in combination with traditional painting techniques that concentrate on condensation and the layering of layers of colour. The return to abstract expressivism is reflected in the formlessness, the non-representational. But let us not forget that every formlessness has a form. And personal experiences, losses, the transience of existence are already evident; they force a further turning point, with which Christof also devotes himself to things again.

The sculptures presented by Berthold Grzywatz are characterised by their free form. On the one hand, they unfold an expressive diction, creating jagged surfaces that are seemingly without support; on the other hand, they convey a strict compositional style that emphasises simple basic forms. The design is as intentional as it is intense, even if it is not superficially clear. As in a burning mirror, they point to the traces of human reality, to feelings, moods, longings and perceptions.

Unter dem Titel „Architektur und Landschaft“ zeigt die Galerie [ Der Lokschuppen ] Malerei von Wolfgang D. Mehnert und Skulpturen von Berthold Grzywatz.

Wolfgang D. Mehnert hat Kunst in Frankreich studiert; seine erste Ausstellung, der Studienabschluss mit der Gruppe seines Jahrgangs fand im Jahr 1970 in Aix-en-Provence statt. Nur zwei Jahre später kehrt er zurück ins universitäre Leben, studiert Architektur in Konstanz und Hamburg. Anschließend arbeitet er langjährig als Architekt im kommunalen und privaten Bereich, u. a. ist er an der Ausführung berühmten Feuerwache von Zaha Hadid auf dem Vitra-Werksgelände in Weil am Rhein beteiligt. Doch die Malerei ruht während dieser Zeit nie. Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen in Frankreich, Deutschland und der Schweiz reihen sich nachhaltig aneinander, seine Werke befinden sich in privaten und öffentlichen Sammlungen des In- und Auslands.

Wenn Mehnert Landschaften betrachtet und sie in Malerei umsetzt, wird er vom raumgestaltenden Blick des Architekten angetrieben: Er nimmt Linien wahr, sieht hinter dem scheinbar Willkürlichen der Natur ordnende Strukturen, die über Stimmungen hinaus auf vielfältige Bedeutungen verweisen.

In einer seiner textlichen Skizzen spricht Mehnert die stets gegenwärtige Veränderung an, die von vielen nicht bemerkt werden will. Geradezu ein Stichwort für die neuen Holzskulpturen von Berthold Grzywatz, die in einem Zyklus von der „Verlorenen Generation“ sprechen: Vom Bewusstsein einer Veränderung ohne Retourenschein. Ausgehend von der naturgegebenen Form nutzt Grzywatz die Ausdruckskraft des Farblichen, um das plastische Objekt hervorzuheben.

Under the title "Architecture and Landscape", the [ Der Lokschuppen ] gallery is showing paintings by Wolfgang D. Mehnert and sculptures by Berthold Grzywatz.

Wolfgang D. Mehnert studied art in France; his first exhibition, the graduation with the group of his year, took place in Aix-en-Provence in 1970. Just two years later, he returned to university life and studied architecture in Constance and Hamburg. He then worked for many years as an architect in the municipal and private sectors, including his involvement in the realisation of Zaha Hadid's famous fire station on the Vitra factory premises in Weil am Rhein. But his painting never stopped during this time. Solo and group exhibitions in France, Germany and Switzerland followed one after the other, and his works can be found in private and public collections in Germany and abroad.

When Mehnert looks at landscapes and translates them into painting, he is driven by the architect's space-shaping gaze: He perceives lines, sees organising structures behind the seemingly arbitrary of nature, which point beyond moods to manifold meanings.

In one of his textual sketches, Mehnert addresses the ever-present change that many do not want to notice. This is almost a keyword for the new wooden sculptures by Berthold Grzywatz, which speak of the "Lost Generation" in a cycle: Of the awareness of a change without a return. Starting from the natural form, Grzywatz uses the expressive power of colour to emphasise the sculptural object.
