"There are caves inside me". Dealing with the unconscious.

Sculptures and photomontages by Berthold Grzywatz.

The thought of the English Romantic William Wordsworth, updated in the theme, is intended to describe the power of the unconscious in the human psyche in an approving way. Today it is common knowledge that the unconscious influences our behaviour and actions without always being subject to a comprehensible logic. Who was not surprised when hoarding became rampant in the approaching pandemic and suddenly the most banal things were no longer tangible.

In the current work, which is based on sculptural works but also on photomontages, I would like to use artistic means to approach the phenomenon of the unconscious in the pandemic crisis. Of course, it is not about an attempt at explanation, but about a pictorial unlocking, with the aim of reflecting the dynamics of the unconscious in a situational way.

I have chosen wood and stone as the central materials. In the shaping, on the one hand the texture of the natural surfaces is used as a means, on the other hand the biomorphic structures are used by way of alienation. Accompanying material will be metal (steel, aluminium); as well as scaffolding and basis as in the fusion with the materials wood and stone through a unifying colouring.

An important role in this exhibition is played by the photographic material, which has been created in a symbiosis of sculpture and photography, as it were. It is the photomontages that seek to stimulate insights into that which is difficult to fathom.

The unexpected challenges our artistic creativity - not as a means of coping with crises, but as an instrument of reflection in the face of consternation and suffering.
